Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
I know many christians who are constantly searching for the church that is “just right” for them. The stage must be set perfectly for them to feel comfortable to serve God, but they’re missing the point. In Matthew 4:4-5, Jesus called out to Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then and there, these two men dropped everything and followed Him. They knew nothing of this man, and they left everything for Him.
In our world today, for us to believe or to follow something, it must “make sense.” It must be logical and we always need proof. We discuss, we argue, we search for answers unrelentlessly until everything “makes sense.” In all honesty if I was one of those fisherman, my very first reaction would have been to ask, “Why should I follow you? What would I get out of it? Where’s the proof?” And yet, they followed him no questions asked. It didn’t make sense.
Often, the more we talk, the more we try to reason, and the more we ask God “Why?” the more complicated our lives get. The answer is so simple though it seems so much harder because we’re giving up control. Spend less time talking and more time listening to what God is trying to say to you. Only God can give you the answers you are searching for. He has amazing plans for you, the path is already set, the battles already won and all you have to do is say yes to following Him.
Become a person who would give up anything to be with God, who would follow Jesus no matter what the cost. God doesn’t look at what church you went to, your job, your house, He looks at your heart. Your heart needs to be willing to follow God through every situation, knowing that He has better plans for you and will always be there to catch you when you fall. Your heart needs to be serious about serving God and serious about following through with your willingness to give up anything for Him, because He will test you. Stop focusing on making sure everything makes sense and just take every word from God literally. No questions asked.
Jesus died on the cross and when He rose, “He said to them, ‘Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.” (Luke 24:49) He gave us proof of life and His last words before He ascended in the book of Luke were, “I am going to send you what my Father has promised…” (Luke 24:49) What more proof do you need? Jesus is alive, sitting at the right hand of God and interceding on your behalf everyday. Give up control, let Him guide your life and someday, you can be there too.
“God is a lot more serious about Himself than I am about Him.” (Francis Chan)
Read the words of Jesus like its the first time you have ever heard them. As if, until that point you had never heard the words of anyone before. No biased opinions clouding your view. No doubts in the back of your mind saying, “What He really meant was…” Take it literally and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you as you listen to God’s prompting. The proof you are searching for doesn’t always make sense, but its there.
